It is said that one should breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper, but how many of us really pay any attention to that? Lunch can be particularly hit and miss these days, with many of us eating on the hoof or al-desko due to the pressures of work.

Few people can afford a leisurely hour over lunch these days but whatever time you do have, it doesn’t take much to make the most of it.

Walk away from the desk
Eating at the desk is a no-no on many fronts, not the least of which is your health and wellbeing. A lunch break is supposed to be a break, a resetting time to recharge your batteries and clear your mind. So walk away from your desk. Leave the lap top and problems behind for a short while and take a well-earned break.

Set some quality time aside
Carve out half an hour for yourself, at the very least, because lunch is an important part of your working day. It’s not simply about sustaining yourself; lunch is a time to relax and enjoy food so invent a new ritual and see how you start to feel.

You are who you eat with
‘Company’ doesn’t just mean the place you work. Try to meet up with other people for lunch because collaborative eating can stimulate discussion, sharing of ideas and news. Many staff restaurants these days are becoming the ‘third place’ between home and work so take advantage of the facilities within your workplace to ‘break bread’ with colleagues.

Consider using utensils
A sandwich is a popular choice for lunch but something that requires a knife and fork may be even better. With global flavours, health eating choices, seasonality and provenance all merging to offer eclectic and delicious food choices, there’s every reason to try a hot dish or something fresh and vibrant from the salad bar.

Price and time wait for no man
Value your lunch time and embrace all opportunities to get affordable quality. Walking to the high street for an over-priced wrapped sandwich takes precious time and money so spend it wisely, particularly if your employer has a subsidised catering service in the building.

Make the most of it while it lasts
Life is too short to put up with bad lunches and solitary sad lunches. A good lunch in a relaxed environment can enhance your working day and improve your functuality.  I can’t promise that you will feel like a prince but at least you will break your working day in a more memorable and satisfying way.
