Environment Award Finalists

Mar 3, 2023

It has been a long-standing ethos at Wilson Vale to minimise our impact on the environment. This award commends our sites or individuals who strive to put into place sustainable working initiatives which contribute to our business having a lighter footstep.

Our finalists include Chris Smith from our Operation Teams and our sites – Clare Hall, Hiscox and Microsoft.

Chris Smith, Operations

Chris is a great champion of sustainability, driving multiple projects that encourage carbon reduction and in particular food waste management. His Waste Zero project brought together an impressive A-Z of recipes and guidance on the Root to Stem and Nose to Tail ethos of using ingredients. Chris has implemented food composters and dehydrators, and also supported two sites in attaining Silver Environment Awards.

Clare Hall

Our team at Clare Hall are great ambassadors for reducing the environmental impact of the catering service. They consistently work towards reducing their red meat usage whilst not affecting the variety of their menus. This reduction has a significant impact on lowering the amount of carbon that has been created in the ingredients they use. They introduce lots of new and exciting plant-based products and have recently been awarded a Silver Environment Award by Cambridge Sustainable Food.

Hiscox

A very environmentally conscious site, it has driven the way in removing single-use plastics, having plant-based menu days, introducing plastic free condiment stations, recycling used cooking oil into bio-diesel and recycling food waste. The team have been great at the smooth roll-out of these environmental projects and continue to build on their progress with new exciting ideas.

Microsoft

Implementation of Sage composters, recycling coffee grounds and growing herbs on-site are some of the great environmental initiatives that this team have put into place. The composters repurpose the site’s food waste so that employees can take it home and use as a soil improver. Similarly, the coffee grounds produced are put out for employees to recycle with our Back to Ground scheme. The newly installed Evo-Gro System has also been a big hit, allowing them the team to grow their own fresh micro herbs.

The winner will be announced on our Wilson Vale Awards Roadshow – starting on 13th March. Keep a close eye on our Instagram and LinkedIn to follow us on our award giving journey!
